Nearly 20 years after committing sexual assault of a child, a Beloit man receives the maximum sentence for the crime.

Rock County Judge Karl Hanson sentenced 42-year-old Jason Smith to 25 years of prison followed by 10 years of extended supervision Tuesday.

His attack and sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Beloit occurred in July of 2000, but he wasn’t charged until June of 2018 after a statewide push to test backlogged sexual assault kits.

Smith pleaded no contest to two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child with the use of a dangerous weapon last February.

He is currently serving a 50-year prison sentence for the sexual assaults of two other teenage girls in October of 2000.

Judge Hanson said the newest sentence means Smith will likely spend the rest of his life in prison, but he found it necessary given the severity of the crime and the pattern of behavior.
