Police have evidence of a Janesville arson suspect possessing flammable materials and singed clothes that smelled like fuel.

Three Janesville police officers testified during the preliminary hearing for 30-year-old Jacob Piper of Fort Atkinson, who is accused of throwing an incendiary device at a duplex on South Franklin Street at the end of May.

He is charged with arson and five counts of attempted homicide.

Detective Thomas Bechen said two occupants saw Piper outside the residence the morning of the fire, and police recovered broken glass at the front of the house that smelled like gasoline.

Officer Ed Van Fossen said they searched the vehicle belonging to Piper and found the spout of a gas can and multiple lighters.

When police arrested Piper, Van Fossen said he smelled like fuel and had singe marks on his jeans and facial hair.

Piper’s lawyer argued prosecutors have not shown a strong motive and the witnesses were “questionable people.”
