The roof of the Milton Public Library is leaking and damaging the interior of the building.

The Milton Public Works Committee declared a public welfare emergency Tuesday night to help the city respond to the issue more quickly.

Public Works Director Howard Robinson said the emergency declaration allows the city to circumvent its normal bidding process and select a contractor to start repairs.

Water from the roof worked its way through the insulation and down into the ceiling of the library, where over five gallons poured in.

Robinson said the city had been preparing to replace the roof of the building but the situation worsened more quickly than they expected.

The Milton City Council will work through budgeting options to pay for the repairs, which could cost over $175,000.
