Rock County is exploring plans for a solar power partnership with Alliant Energy.

Facilities Management Director Brent Sutherland told the county’s general services committee Tuesday that the power company is working with the county to study the feasibility of potential solar array sites.

The county is interested in using the former Rock Haven nursing home site on North County Road F, but they are also considering a portion of county-owned farmland along Highway 14 near North Newville Road.

These early stages of negotiations center around Alliant paying for all of the costs of the project and leasing the land from the county.

The potential solar field locations are in commercial areas away from residences, and Sutherland said it would help Rock County reduce its carbon footprint and bolster its efforts to be more environmentally friendly.

Any potential project would also require approval from the state’s Public Service Commission.
