Household heating bills are expected to spike this winter.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says rising prices for heating oil and natural gas could lead to increases in utility bills across the country.

Community Action of Rock and Walworth counties works with Energy Services Inc. of Wisconsin to refer low-income residents for utility assistance and their weatherization program to help reduce heating bills.

Program Manager Kaleena Kirpatrick said they use funding from the Wisconsin Division of Energy, Housing, and Community Resources to inspect qualifying households to determine where they can install energy-saving improvements.

She said many older homes don’t have as much insulation in the walls and attics, and older appliances may also contribute to inefficient energy use.
