An arson attempt at a Janesville duplex last week may have been motivated by a woman turning down the male suspect.

The criminal complaint says 30-year-old Jacob Piper and a woman visited the residents of the duplex on South Academy Street last week Wednesday.

One of the victims told police Piper “was trying to have a sexual relationship” with her, but she “rejected his advances which created tension between the two of them.”

Witnesses saw Piper throw an incendiary device at the home just before 6:00 the next morning, and he’s now charged in Rock County Court with five counts of attempted first degree intentional homicide and one count of arson

Assistant District Attorney James Woywod asked a court commission to set a six-figure bond to ensure Piper’s appearances in court.

His defense attorney Mark Eisenberg argued the criminal complaint did not show a motive or intent to hurt anyone.

Court Commissioner Jack Hoag set Piper’s cash bond at $20,000.
