Wisconsin’s First Congressional District will have a primary for the Democratic candidates in the race, but Bryan Steil will not face a Republican challenger for the seat.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission ruled Wednesday in favor of a Republican Party challenge of the signatures collected by Republican John Baker of Mukwonago.

The commission’s ruling left him with fewer than the 1,000 signatures required to be on the ballot.

Democratic candidate Roger Polack of Caledonia challenged signatures submitted by Democrat Josh Pade of Bristol. The WEC determined 16 signatures were invalid but Pade still had enough to remain on the ballot for an August primary.

In the 44th Assembly District Race, the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee challenged the signatures submitted by Libertarian candidate Reese Wood.

The commission determined 13 of his signatures were invalid, taking him off of the ballot and leaving the race between Democrat Sue Conley and Republican DuWayne Severson.

Both Wood and Baker expressed frustration with the signature gathering process during the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited their opportunities to meet with constituents in person.
