A survey conducted by the School District of Janesville shows public support for both an operational and facilities referendum on the November ballot.
The survey sent to residents in the last week of July asked respondents for their thoughts on the two referenda and the immediate needs of the district, with a majority supporting the potential tax increase.
Multiple school board members expressed some confusion over the wording of the tax impact of the operational referendum question, which would add a compounding $40 increase each year for every $100,000 of assessed value.
The referenda would be placed on the upcoming November ballot, but the tax increases would not begin until 2022.
Superintendent Steve Pophal stressed the importance of the operational referendum to meet millions of dollars of projected budget deficits over the next five years.
If the referendum is not passed, Pophal said the district would likely need to lay off staff, which would also increase class sizes.
