The Rock County Board can’t decriminalize the possession of marijuana, but it got as close as it could by reducing the fine for THC possession to $1.

The board voted Thursday night on the change to the Rock County ordinance, which will affect cases handled by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office but not city and township police departments.

County board member Yuri Rashkin called it a historic decision. He and other board members hope municipalities in the county will follow their lead in reducing the fines for possession of fewer than 28 grams.

The Beloit City Council was already considering a change to its marijuana possession forfeitures, cutting back from $300 to $100 for a first offense like Janesville and Milton.

In a 2018 advisory referendum, 69 percent of Rock County voters said they supported the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Wisconsin.
