Both Janesville hospitals have contacted the city to inquire about the availability of its “surge shelter” for COVID patients. As the available bed space dwindles amidst a rapidly growing number of COVID infections, City Manager Mark Freitag reassures residents the portable hospital tents, with space for up to fifty patients, can be deployed with a phone call. Freitag says mid-summer he had hoped the shelter might never be needed, but now admits frustration at the number of residents who appear to resist taking any health precautions to protect their community.
