A local non-profit organization releases the first Black-owned business directory for the Rock County area.

Rock County Jumpstart founder and executive director Genia Stevens spent months working with area business owners to gather accurate contact information and set up the proper channels of communication.

Earlier this year, WCLO contacted chambers of commerce and economic development leaders in Janesville, Beloit and Milton, and none were keeping track of Black-owned businesses in their area.

Stevens aims to build a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem that she feels is missing in the Rock County area.

The Beloit City Council designated this week as Black Business Week in Beloit, which she said is an important step in recognizing the work and value of these small business owners.

Stevens thinks the community will be surprised to see the quantity and variety of Black-owned businesses in southern Wisconsin, and she hopes the public will consider buying local this holiday season.

The directory list is available on the Rock County Jumpstart website.
