Under a proposal before the Janesville City Council Monday night, residences with two car garages could have driveways the same width as homes with three car garages.

City Engineer Mike Payne says currently homes with two garage stalls are allowed to have a driveway that is 24 feet wide at the sidewalk and 30 feet wide at the curb.

Payne says the proposed ordinance would allow driveways with a 30 foot width at the sidewalk and 36 feet at the curb.

Payne says many homeowners with a two car garage are building a third parking space for a boat or RV and finding out that they can’t widen their driveway as well.

The City Council will hold a public hearing before considering approval of the ordinance Monday night.
