Lawyers plan to proceed to a jury trial for a Fort Atkinson man accused of a Janesville arson.
31-year-old Jacob Piper is charged with arson and five counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide after witnesses told police they saw him throw an incendiary device at a Janesville home in May of 2020.
Piper’s attorney and prosecutors argued Wednesday in a final pre-trial hearing over the relevancy of testimony about drug use and possible dealing from the home.
Previous hearings revealed evidence of Piper having a gas can and lighters in his vehicle, but his lawyer has questioned the reliability of the witnesses and noted a lack of strong motive.
His week-long jury trial is scheduled to begin September 13. He is out of custody on a 20-thousand-dollar cash bond.
