This year’s theme for World Migratory Bird Day is Dim the Lights for Birds at Night. Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge Secretary Cindy Skrukrud says they have materials and educational information about how people can help birds during their migration. Skrukrud says light produced pollution is a significant threat to migratory birds, because they use stars to help them in their migration and if they’re traveling through really lit up cities, it can disorient them. She says, it’s especially important during this time of year if individuals can help keep the skies dark by turning off outdoor lights at night, among other things. The event will be celebrated at the north edge of the town of Genoa City May 14.
