Jansville school officials are reassuring parents after a police officer’s hand-gun accidentally went-off Monday.  In a letter to parents, Superintendent Mark Holzman writes “at Edison Middle School, while in their personal office, the school liaison officer was removing their backpack, and in that process, a part of the backpack got caught or hung up with the butt of their service firearm, which was properly secured in the holster. At this time, the handgun discharge into the floor of their office. The officer was not injured, nor was anyone else injured.”  Holzman adds police have determined no identifiable reason for the unintended discharge and the handgun, ammunition, and holster have all been returned to their manufacturers to help identify any defect contributing to the incident.  The superintendent reminds parents the district benefits from a strong partnership with Janesville police, which includes having school liaison officers present in the middle and high schools.
