The second round of community forums Wednesday evening saw two more candidates for Beloit Superintendent answer questions from the community.

Dr. Brenda Lewis and Dr. Willie Garrison spoke about how they’ve handled budgets in the past.

Lewis noted that she was tasked with communicating to the public why they needed a referendum to sustain class sizes and maintain programming, one she says wasn’t exciting, but was necessary.

Garrison said he has a mindset of not spending what a district doesn’t have, and being innovative in how the district would ask from those in the community.

Both candidates then spoke on the importance of support personnel within the district.

Garrison said he believes they are critical to the success of a district and they should feel like they belong and they are growing.

Lewis said she will often see other people of her level not greet or take the opinion of support staff members, and that she believes the jobs matter and aren’t below her position.

The school board will now review the forums, do a background and reference check, and make a final decision on October 11th.
