The Rock County Homeless Intervention Task Force has a lot more ground to cover during it’s annual winter homeless count.

ECHO Executive Director Jessica Locher says the annual winter homeless count is Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Volunteers will meet at ECHO and midnight and will visit places homeless people typically sleep at night, offering outreach.

Locher says including those in shelters, Rock County typically has between 300 and 400 homeless people on any given day.

Volunteers go out twice a year in summer and winter do do a hand count of those living on the streets.

Locher says the count is important for agencies that aid the homeless to retain their government funding.
