Local businesses in Janesville who dump extra amounts of phosphorus into the city’s water treatment plant will now have to pay an additional surcharge.

Utility Director Dave Botts says after looking at the overall cost of operations for the businesses, including their annual water and sewer bills, the additional surcharge isn’t expected to have a major impact on any of the businesses.

Botts says as many as 19 businesses could be affected, but they expect about six to have to pay the surcharge, which would provide an additional $53,500 in funding to properly treat phosphorus.

The city council unanimously passed the ordinance at Monday night’s meeting.
