Ice fishers in Rock County will soon need to remove their permanent ice shanties from local bodies of water.

Wisconsin Recreation Warden Nick Webster says the deadline to remove shanties will vary depending on where you are in the state, but because Rock County is below I-64, people have until March 5th to remove them.

Webster says people also need to pay attention to ice levels, and due to possible warm weather, they may need to be removed sooner.

Webster says fines will be imposed for those leaving their shanty out beyond March 5th, and people will be responsible for covering the cost should a shanty slip into the water.

Portable ice shanties can still be used after March 5th, so long as they are removed from the ice when they’re not actively being used.
