An outdoor program at Welty Environmental Center led by former biology teacher Dave Bendlin will teach people how to identify a variety of common wild edible plants.

Program Director Aaron Wilson says participants will be led around Big Hill Park searching for edible plants like grape tendrils and gooseberries, and he’ll also help people avoid dangerous plants like poison ivy and wild parsnip.

Wilson says the hike focuses mostly on berries and plants but if they come across an edible mushroom he’ll help people identify which funguses are safe to eat and which to avoid.

The hike takes place Saturday from 10am until noon and people can register by visiting the Welty Environmental Center website.
