Hoag sets $1.5 million bond for man accused of shooting at Janesville cop

A judge sets bond at $1.5 million for Tyrone Gibson, the 25-year Janesville man accused of shooting at police as they tried to arrest him in a separate shooting.

Court Commissioner Jack Hoag set cash bond for Tyrone Gibson on charges of attempted first-degree intentional attempted homicide, first-degree reckless endangerment, and felon in possession of a gun.

The Rock County D.A.’s office had asked for $500,000 cash bail in each of the two shootings Oct. 1 and Oct. 4. Gibson was in jail Monday on a probation hold.

Gibson’s accused of shooting a 21-year-old man on South Jackson Street last week and then trying to shoot an officer who’d spotted him on the west side days later.

Assistant Rock County District Attorney Maggie Ginocchio says she recommended $500,000 in both shootings. Gibson’s accused of pulling a gun from his waistband Oct. 4 and shooting once at a Janesville police detective, missing the detective.

The detective had spotted Gibson, who was wanted on a warrant in an Oct. 1 shooting on South Jackson Street.

Ginocchio told Hoag she thinks Gibson’s bond should be set high because he’s been convicted of 15 crimes, including five felonies, two of which were for felony escape.

She says he’s suspected of shooting a person “in the butt cheek” on Oct. 1, and then shooting at a police officer during an arrest.

Ginocchio says as Gibson was fleeing police during the Oct. 4 shooting at a detective, Gibson also pointed his gun at a 72-year-old woman who was in her yard and threatened he’d kill her.

Hoag set bail in the two shootings at $1.5 million, saying he’s doubtful Gibson would show up for his next hearing this month otherwise.

Hoag points out that the initial shooting Oct. 1 led to an apparent retaliatory shooting at Woodman’s Food Market in Janesville.

Another Janesville man, 19-year-old Lawrence White, is arrested in that shooting over the weekend, but White has yet to appear in court.

If Gibson somehow posts bond, Hoag has stipulated he’d immediately go under 24-hour house arrest. He faces another hearing later this month.
