A state representative from Rock County is making it easier for new born babies to be safely surrendered.

The heart-wrenching story of a mother who left a newborn baby to die in a farm field in Whitewater inspired 31st Assembly District Representative Ellen Schutt to take action.

Schutt says the bill would allow municipalities to install newborn infant safety devices – or baby boxes – at a hospital, fire station, or law enforcement agency building.

Schutt’s bill has passed both chambers of the legislature and just waits for Governor Tony Evers’ signature.

The Clinton Republican says there are efforts in both Elkhorn and Edgerton to install safe haven baby boxes once the bill is singed.
