Every time an incident occurs at a Wisconsin railroad crossing, Don Vruwink takes notice.

In his first 10 months on the job as State Railroad Commissioner, there have been 27 collisions involving trains.

Vruwink says there was one week where there was three train collisions because people drove around gates that were down.

In November a train derailed at the Five Points intersection in Janesville causing cars loaded with soybeans to spill.

Vruwink also notes that there is currently only one inspector for more than 4000 crossings in the state, adding to safety concerns.  The state budget allows for two inspectors, but turnover is high due to a less than competitive compensation package.
