Janesville police say they’ve ruled out homicide in what officers say was a person found dead on railroad tracks along the Humes Road corridor on the city’s northeast side Tuesday morning.

Janesville police Sgt. Benji Thompson says detectives are still working to determine circumstances, but officers were called to a person dead, their body apparently found laying in the middle of the railroad tracks this morning near the busy intersection of Humes and Kennedy roads.

Thompson says it’s clear by severe injuries the person sustained that they’d been struck by a train, although police were working to figure out when they were struck, and by which train. Rock County 911 dispatch indicates a call reporting the situation came shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Police have checked camera footage from one of a few trains that railroad records show passed along the rail line Tuesday, which is the line that crosses Humes and Kennedy Road at an angle. Thompson says investigators learned the train with the camera apparently did not apparently strike a person.

Police investigated several hours, at one point blocking and directing traffic and setting a screen between the tracks and the busy intersection to block passersby from viewing the scene.

Police haven’t released more information, but Thompson says detectives are doubtful of foul play. He says police will release more information as they’re able.
