The 34-year-old Beloit man who Beloit Police shot at when he charged at an officer aggressively appears in Rock County Court for his preliminary hearing.

Court Commissioner Mason Braunschweig bound Thomas Sykes over for trial on charges of burglar, child abuse, two counts of disorderly conduct, two counts of bail jumping, and resisting an officer. Beloit Police Officer Tyler Bailey testified at the hearing.

Neighbors say Sykes was acting erratically in a west-side neighborhood, going into homes and grabbing and shoving people — both those he knows and strangers — on Oak Street on May 29 when neighbors called police to respond.

Police say they found Sykes in a side yard when he turned and sprinted toward an officer in an “aggressive manner.” Police say the officer shot at him once, missing him. No one was injured.

Sykes is expected to appear back in Rock County Court Tuesday afternoon for his arraignment. He’s currently being held in the Rock County Jail on a $5000 cash bond.
