The Janesville Fire Department responded to a blaze in the alley behind the former Ed’s Sewing and Vacuum early Saturday.

The Rock County 911 Communications Center said the fire at 410 W. Milwaukee St. was reported just after 1 a.m.

Fire officials said Janesville police officers discovered the fire and began coordinating the evacuation of 10 residents from apartments above the storefront.

Officials said flames damaged the rear of the structure and that there was smoke damage throughout the building. The displaced residents will be able to stay with friends or family, and two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

The fire department estimates a loss of about $150,000.
