A Janesville teenager faces a child abuse charge after an incident at a Janesville grocery store.

Prosecutors say Andrew Oliver, 17, was one of a group of five or six people who surrounded a 16-year-old cashier while he was on duty the night of Nov. 15.

A review of surveillance footage showed the group verbally harassing the cashier while some recorded the confrontation on their cellphones. The footage also showed two people strike the cashier, one of whom authorities say was Oliver.

On Nov. 21, Oliver was in a car that was pulled over and was taken to the police department.

He initially denied being at the store, but after being shown video of the incident, he admitted he was there. He says the victim called him a name and challenged him to come to the store and fight him.

Oliver was given a $500 signature bond in Rock County Court on Tuesday.
