Rock County prosecutors charge a Janesville man with attempting to flee an officer, obstruction and a fifth OWI offense.

According to the criminal complaint, a Janesville police officer tried to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle with a burned-out headlight on Center Avenue near State Street early Saturday morning, but instead of pulling over, it accelerated to about 50 mph over the speed limit.

The cop lost sight of the car, but it was found unoccupied a short time later and the apparent driver, Jeremiah Jensen, 42, was located nearby.

Prosecutors say Jensen gave a false name and birth date and that he had drug paraphernalia on his person. He took a breath test that came back clean but showed signs of impairment during sobriety testing.

During a blood draw, Jensen volunteered that he had cocaine and marijuana in his system. He also told police that he got nervous when he saw the police lights and hit the gas.

Jensen was given a $5,000 cash bond during a court appearance Tuesday.
