The holiday season can be rough on the stomach — but not as rough as tainted cucumbers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says consumers should be on the lookout for Mexican-grown cucumbers that have been shipped to 26 states, including Wisconsin.

The produce is being recalled over a potential salmonella threat.

SunFed, the company that shipped out the whole cucumbers, learned from the FDA that people who bought the produce had been sickened by salmonella between Oct. 10 and Nov. 15.

Salmonella can cause stomach and gastrointestinal infections that can severely sicken the elderly and the very young. Three Wisconsin residents are among 68 people nationwide who reportedly have become ill after eating the cucumbers.

Cucumbers affected were sold by SunFed between mid-October and Nov. 26.

If you have whole cucumbers with the SunFed label reading “Agrotato S.A. de C.V.,” you should throw them away or take them back to the store.
