A Beloit man pleads guilty to charges stemming from a drug deal and shooting on Janesville’s south side.
26-year-old Virgil Tate was sentenced Thursday to a total of three years in prison followed by three years of extended supervision and six years of probation.
Police say Tate shot a man in December of 2019 after the victim attempted to buy drugs from him and ran off without paying.
Tate pleaded guilty to first-degree recklessly endangering safety and manufacturing and delivering cocaine. A charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide was dismissed along with related drug charges as part of a plea agreement.
Assistant District Attorney Mary Bricco cited Tate’s limited criminal record and need for rehabilitation as a reason for the structure of the sentence.
