Four tenants at a Janesville duplex are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross after a multi-story fire causes “heavy” damage.

The Janesville Fire Department responded to the house in the 800 block of Benton Avenue on the city’s near-north side just after 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters found heavy fire and smoke visible from the rear of the structure with flames present on both levels and the attic.

All four residents escaped without suffering injuries, but the property sustained $50,000 of smoke and fire damage throughout the interior.

Firefighters remained on scene for three hours to locate and extinguish any remaining embers, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
