An annual remembrance of local men who served and suffered will take place this Memorial Day’s eve.
The Janesville Tank Company Ceremony will commence at 7:00 Sunday evening at the 192nd Tank Battalion Monument at West Milwaukee and North Franklin Streets.
The observance will honor those soldiers who are now remembered as the Janesville 99.
The group of local men were sent to the Philippines in late 1941, just prior to the U.S. withdrawal from that region.
The men were imprisoned by the Japanese and endured the Bataan Death March.
Thirty-five of the 99 survived and returned home three-and-a-half years later.
The remains of many of those in the group who perished have never been recovered and returned home.
