A fire department merger between the Edgerton Fire Protection district and five Rock County municipalities, including Milton won’t have much of an impact on service in Janesville.

Janesville Fire Chief Jim Ponkauskas says the fire department will continue to serve the parts of the towns of Rock, Harmony, LaPrairie, and Janesville that it has always served.

Ponkauskas says the Janesville fire Department will likely no longer be dispatched as the closest unit to some of the rural communities surrounding Milton after the New Fire Protection district is established.

The the City of Milton and four other Rock County communities began exploring joining the Edgerton Fire Protection District after Janesville raised it’s fees to be more in line with costs.
