Janesville police are investigating a dead body found Sunday afternoon on the city’s south side.

Sergeant Dean Sukus said a neighbor found the “badly decomposed” body in a wooded area of an empty lot in the 2200 block of Pierce Street near the intersection of Burbank Avenue.

He estimated the body had been decomposing for “sometime over a week.”

The Janesville Fire Department assisted with clearing brush and vegetation around the body, and reporters on scene could smell a strong odor.

Sukus said the decay of the body made it difficult to identify, and he couldn’t provide a gender or age range.

Police have not determined if the death involved any sort of foul play, but investigators believe it was an isolated incident with no further danger to the public.

It marked the second dead body recovered by police over the weekend, as Rock County Sheriff’s deputies found a body Saturday while searching for a missing Janesville man near the city’s northwest side.

Both autopsies are expected to be completed this week.
