Piles of rubble sit where the former General Motors plant once stood on Janesville’s south side.

The company that owns Centennial Industrial Park expects to clear the debris by the end of next month as it prepares the property for redevelopment.

Janesville economic development director Gale Price said the city had concerns about the lack of activity on the site, and Commercial Development Company told the city it anticipates having “all of the materials off of the site” by the end of August.

Price said they might leave the existing concrete floors in place for future developers to potentially reuse.

The southern end of the property, which was once home to the Janesville Auto Transport Company (JATCO), is ready for development, but Price said the COVID-19 pandemic has limited the commercial interest in the site.

He envisions the area as a whole developing into an industrial park, with opportunity for mixed use and potential residential development on the southern portion.
