The city of Janesville will be cutting next year’s budget by close to $2.5 million compared to this year. Finance Director Max Gagin says the city did suffer revenue losses in several areas as a result of the pandemic. Those losses will be reflected in a 0.6% increase in the tax levy next year. Gagin says the city was able to save significant dollars from decreases in debt service and capital programs. As recently as August, Gagin had been expecting a more than $700 thousand deficit, but has since learned the state will not be cutting shared revenue payments as feared. He says the more than 2% reduction in spending should not adversely impact city programs. A number of city council workshops are planned to help finalize the budget by December.
