Janesville police report another decrease in the crime rate last year.

Police Chief Dave Moore released the department’s annual report, showing crime down 11 percent in 2020.

He said numbers from individual years are less important than the longer term trend, which has been decreasing overall for more than a decade.

Moore believes lowering crime goes beyond the police department, and he credits the school system, parenting and other organizations working together to strengthen the community.

So far in 2021, he is seeing an increase in vehicle thefts often involving unlocked cars with keys left inside of them.

The chief is also concerned about increased gun crimes in surrounding communities, and his department is trying to be proactive to keep it from spreading here.
