The City of Janesville hopes a junior lifeguarding camp can teach youth the skills necessary to become the next generation of lifeguards at city pools.

Recreation Programmer Elaina Noffsinger says the class starts July 10th and is for kids ages 11-14 who are competent swimmers and are looking to bridge the gap between swim lessons and lifeguard certification.

Noffsinger says there is also a list of pre-requisites for those participating in the camp including the ability to swim front crawl and breaststroke for 25 yards, tread water for one minute without arms, swim 10 feet underwater, and perform a back float or back crawl.

Noffsigner says kids will be introduced to life-saving skills such as in water rescues, use of a rescue tube, first aid, and CPR.

People can visit the city’s website for more information including on how to register.
