The local grocery wars continue. Now, Janesville’s Festival Foods Supermarket is gearing up to permanently roll beer, wine and liquor into online grocery orders for pickup.

A state law change during the COVID-19 pandemic allows restaurants to serve curbside cocktails to go, but the city of Janesville’s Alcohol License Advisory Commission has authority over whether to allow grocers to offer beer, wine and liquor with online orders.

According to city records, two major competitors of festival foods, Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart, already offer permanent outside delivery of online food orders, including alcohol.

Liquor Commission members OK’d Festival’s plan on Tuesday but pushed for clearer working that would require customers who order alcohol for pickup to be in the vehicle, at least 21, and have a valid state ID. The city’s approval would not allow third party delivery services to deliver online alcohol orders to customers’ homes.

Full approval for Festival’s plan is pending the Janesville City Council’s final OK.
