The roads in South Beloit will get a little more care and maintenance thanks to a 1% sales tax increase that was approved by city voters this week.

Mayor Tom Fitzgerald says they’ve been in a dire situation in regards to their roads, and they’ve been neglected for years because they didn’t have the funds to repair them.

Fitzgerald says most of their businesses are located along I-90 and bring in 85 to 90 percent of their sales tax, and the tax increase should have a minimum impact on residents.

The sales tax increase could generate about $1 million a year for road repairs, according to city officials.
