The threat of moderate flooding along the Rock River seems to have eased.

Yet, boating no-wake orders remain in place, and likely will the rest of the week.

The county instituted slow/no-wake orders on the Rock River early this month from Lake Koshkonong south to Beloit as rain and snow melt pushed river levels to 8 1/2 feet. As of (Monday) river levels topped over 9 feet, edging the river into minor flood stage.

But National Weather Service has downgraded earlier predictions of a surge on river of 10 1/2 feet at Afton. That would have put the river near moderate flood levels, with water over a few low roads on Janesville’s south side and near Afton.

Even after rains over the weekend, the Weather Service now predicts the river to crest at 9 feet, 4 inches at Afton by midweek — about a foot lower than was predicted last week. That would limit flooding to low-lying farm fields near Afton.

Little rain is expected this week, but river levels at Afton are predicted to linger around 9 feet through the weekend. That would keep county slow/no-wake orders in effect.
