The Janesville man suspected of fatally shooting his possibly pregnant ex-girlfriend in the stomach earlier this month is having a hard time finding an attorney.

In court on Friday, Rock County Court Commissioner Mason Braunschweig agreed to hold off until May 10 on an initial criminal hearing for 23-year-old Logan Barclay.

He says a public defender needs more time to find Barclay a defense lawyer skilled to take on what would be a class A murder case.

Braunschweig says there are only a couple of defense lawyers in Rock County qualified to take on such cases. He says at least one of those lawyers already is dealing with a heavy case load of people accused in violent crimes.

Barclay appeared in court via jail video on Friday. He’s being held in Rock County Jail on a $1 million bond on first-degree homicide charges he killed his ex-girlfriend, Kiersten Hansen of Janesville.

Police say Barclay shot Hansen in the stomach with a .22-caliber gun April 16 and left her to die on a Peace Trail, a wooded public bike trail along the Rock River on Janesville’s south side. They say the shooting happened after Hansen told Barclay she was pregnant and wanted to keep the baby.
