The City of Milton is considering joining the Edgerton Fire Protection District instead of merging with Janesville or forming its own fire department.

Edgerton Fire Chief Randy Pickering presented the potential options to the Milton City Council Thursday night.

The fire protection district operates separately from the city of Edgerton, but each municipality that is part of the district gets a seat on its governing board.

That would give Milton more control and oversight over the operations than a complete merger with the Janesville Fire Department.

Pickering suggested a few models for Milton to consider, some of which could be cheaper than the Janesville option depending on how much they want to staff fire stations with full-time and paid-on-call firefighters.

Janesville is ending its shared services agreement with Milton at the end of the year.
